For food and beverage processors in British Columbia, a sudden power outage means more than just a halt in production. It can lead to thousands of dollars in spoiled inventory, costly cleanup, and significant revenue loss, all while operational expenses continue to rise. In this session, Gurmesh Sidhu, CPO and co-founder of Moment Energy, discusses how a battery energy storage system (BESS) can become a strategic asset for facilities.
The BC Hydro Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) program played a crucial role in enabling this project to implement a Moment Energy battery energy storage system (BESS). By financing 80% of the project cost, the ESI program facilitated the customer’s ability to adopt energy storage technology and reduce their energy costs.
Limited Transformer Capacity
The site's current power capacity is 1250 kW, with plans to upgrade to 1750 kW. However, the remaining 56 kW (56 kVA) capacity is a major obstacle to electrification. Upgrading transformer capacity can take multiple years, adding further delays to meeting the site's power needs.
Peak Demand for Electricity
To participate in BC Hydro's Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) Program, the customer needed a BESS capable of shifting or shedding loads to reduce constraints on the grid during winter months.
Moment Energy’s Luna BESS provides clean, affordable, and reliable power.
750 kVA BESS
Moment Energy recommended a 750 kVA BESS, with 400 kVA nominated for the BC Hydro ESI program and the rest for the customer's operations.
Energy Management System
The Luna BESS was integrated with an EMS to support the facility's two MVA transformer and manage participation in demand response events.
Remote Support & Maintainance
Moment Energy will provide ten years of remote support and maintenance for the Luna BESS, ensuring its optimal performance and reliability.

Project Cost Funded by BC Hydro
Participation in the BC Hydro ESI Program resulted in significant cost reduction for the project. The customer received financial incentives for nominating capacity to reduce loads from the BC Hydro grid during the winter months.
Additional Power
The Luna BESS deployment provided an additional 750 kVA of available power, addressing the transformer capacity constraint and facilitating future electrification efforts at the facility.
Prevent Downtime: Understand how a BESS provides backup power to mitigate downstream production effects after an equipment shutdown.
Future-Proof Your Facility: Unlock capacity to expand operations as needed, bypassing the multi-year wait for a grid upgrade.
Secure Over 90% of Project Costs: Combine BC Hydro's Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) Program with Moment Energy’s financial models to cover over 90% of BESS project costs.
